Summer may get most of the attention on Florida’s Emerald Coast, but experienced anglers know that some of the most exciting fishing of the year can happen once September arrives.
The crowds begin to transition out of peak summer season, the Gulf is still warm, and fall fishing opportunities start opening up. For anglers visiting Destin or Fort Walton Beach, September can be an excellent time to get offshore and experience a different side of fishing on the Emerald Coast.
And in 2026, September brings two particularly exciting opportunities: Greater Amberjack and Gag Grouper seasons both open September 1.
At Salty Endeavors Fishing Charters, September is one of our favorite times to get guests out on the Gulf.
Amberjack Season Opens September 1
If you're looking for a fish that's going to test you, Greater Amberjack should be high on the list.
Known for their strength and hard fights, amberjack are one of the more exciting reef-associated fish we target offshore. Hook into a good one and you'll quickly understand why anglers enjoy chasing them.
For 2026, the recreational Greater Amberjack season in Gulf federal waters runs September 1 through October 13, closing at 12:01 a.m. on October 14. The current federal recreational limit is one fish per person per day with a 34-inch fork-length minimum.
That makes September a prime window for anglers specifically interested in targeting amberjack while visiting Destin and Fort Walton Beach.
Gag Grouper Are Back in the Mix
September also brings another highly anticipated opening: Gag Grouper.
For 2026, the recreational Gag Grouper season in Gulf federal waters runs from September 1 through September 30, making this a relatively short opportunity for anglers to get after them.
Gag Grouper are powerful bottom fish that can make for an exciting battle around offshore structure. Once hooked, getting them away from the bottom before they reach cover is part of the challenge.
For anglers who enjoy bottom fishing, the September season adds another reason to consider booking an offshore trip this month.
What Else Can You Catch in Destin During September?
One of the best things about September fishing is the variety.
Exactly what we target on any given charter depends on current regulations, weather, water conditions, recent fishing activity and the length of your trip. But fall fishing around Destin and Fort Walton Beach can include opportunities for species such as:
Greater Amberjack
Gag and other open Grouper species
Vermilion Snapper
White Snapper
Black Snapper
King Mackerel
Spanish Mackerel
Mahi Mahi
Wahoo
Blackfin Tuna
Sharks and other seasonal species
The Destin-Fort Walton Beach tourism authority similarly lists grouper, amberjack, several snapper species, mackerel, mahi, wahoo, tuna and billfish among the area's general fall fishing opportunities.
Of course, fishing seasons and regulations can change, and the presence of a species doesn't guarantee that it can be harvested. Our crew stays current on applicable regulations and determines what makes the most sense to target based on the conditions on the day of your trip.
September Fishing Without the Peak-Summer Rush
There's another reason we like September: the experience itself starts to change.
Destin and Fort Walton Beach are extremely busy during the heart of summer. September begins the transition toward fall while the Gulf waters remain warm and the Emerald Coast is still very much in season.
Destin-Fort Walton Beach describes fall as a time of mild temperatures and warm Gulf waters, with plenty still happening throughout the area.
For visitors, that can make September a great combination: plenty to do on land while still having excellent opportunities to get out on the water.
If your vacation dates are flexible, don't automatically assume June or July is the only time worth booking a fishing charter.
Consider a Longer Offshore Trip
If fishing is one of the main reasons you're visiting Destin, September is also a good time to consider spending a little more time offshore.
A shorter trip can still be a great introduction to fishing the Emerald Coast, particularly for families and first-time anglers.
But a 6- or 8-hour offshore charter gives the captain more time and flexibility.
More time can mean the ability to travel farther when conditions allow, explore additional fishing areas, change tactics when necessary, and spend more of the day actually fishing.
This becomes particularly valuable if you're interested in offshore species such as amberjack and grouper.
No captain can guarantee a particular species or catch—and we'd be skeptical of anyone who does—but giving your crew more time generally provides more options to build the best trip possible around that day's conditions.
Is September Good for Family Fishing?
Absolutely.
You don't have to be an experienced offshore angler to enjoy September fishing in Destin.
We regularly fish with families, kids, first-time anglers and experienced fishermen, and the trip can be tailored around the group.
If you're bringing younger children or simply want a more relaxed experience, let us know. If you've been fishing your entire life and want to spend the day chasing something that pulls hard, tell us that too.
That's one of the advantages of booking a private charter: the trip is yours.
Welcome to the World's Luckiest Fishing Village
There's a reason Destin has long been known as the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village."
Fishing is part of the identity of this area, and fall is no exception. Destin-Fort Walton Beach promotes fishing as a year-round attraction, with charter fishing remaining a major part of the local experience.
September also leads directly into one of the biggest fishing traditions of the year.
The Destin Fishing Rodeo begins in October, a tradition dating back to 1948 that continues to attract anglers and visitors from around the world.
In other words, September isn't the end of fishing season in Destin.
It's the beginning of an entirely different part of it.
